I am Michael Tan, an arts-health practitioner and researcher, artist and educator from Singapore. As a leading advocate for arts & design for health development in Singapore, my research and work interest, support and explore art and design practices in relation to health & Well-being, and human flourishing. I am interested to explore and imagine ways in which creative practice can shape the culture of care in various care settings and the wider context of medical/ health humanities and health communication. At the heart of these explorations, I am interested to shape and imagine forms and approaches to human caring with a good sprinkle of creativity.

I am currently an Associate Professor in Art and Design at Lab4Living at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. In my current role, I have developed the new Master in Design for Health Programme (commencing Fall 2022) and support postgraduate education (PhD & MA). With an aim to foster a healthy and compassionate society, my current inquiries explore and seek to synergise creativity, nature, self-care and end of life issues.
My ongoing collaborations include The Repository for Arts and Health Resources (Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health, Canterbury Christ Church University), The A-health Project (Mcgill University- Nanyang Technological University). I am keen to explore collaboration or supervise projects related to, but not limited to the following lines of inquiry:
- The Future of Care and wellbeing
- Wonderment and Wellbeing
- Therapeutic engagements/ experience (e.g. technology-inspired participatory)
- Therapeutic Objects
- Communicating Health
I have served as PhD examiner, external examiner, reviewer and guest editor for international peer-reviewed journals addressing Creative practice, health and wellbeing. More recently, in 2021, I was appointed as an advisory board member of the Journal of Design for Health.
